Global Compact Principles

1

In 2008, BASF purchased more than 500,000 different raw materials, technical goods and services. The most important raw materials are naphta, LPG and natural gas. A key success factor for BASF is the efficient handling of these materials and the result of the Verbund system at important BASF sites.

2

The BASF Resource Verbund, i.e. the intelligent connection of production plants along our value adding chains, often makes it possible to use by-products from one plant as the raw materials for another plant. Thus, BASF saves raw materials and energy costs.

3

This indicator has no relevance (see materiality analysis: http://www.basf.com/group/corporate/en/sustainability/management-and-instruments/relevant-topics). Our Sao Bernardo do Campo site in Brazil is located next to a UNESCO biosphere reserve. In cooperation with the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), BASF opened the "Espaco Eco" foundation in this biosphere reserve in 2005, the first competence center for eco-efficiency in South America. Our goal is to increase awareness for the Eco-Efficiency Analysis in South America. In addition, the foundation focuses on environmental education and reforestation. As part of the Mata Viva initiative, BASF has been engaged for approximately 25 years in reforestation and sustainable agriculture projects in cooperation with farmers and local organisations. http://www.basf.com/group/corporate/en/sustainability/environment/biodiversity/index

4

Not material due to the facts described under EN 11 and EN 12.

5

Due to BASF's product portfolio, this indicator has no relevance.

6

If there are any cases of fines due to non-compliance with legislation, these are published in the Financial Statements; for 2008, this is not relevant.

7

We primarily transport our products in bulk in ships, tank wagons or tank container by road, rail and waterways. Our works mobility concept in Ludwigshafen, our largest site, received an external award in 2006. The use of company bicycles plays an important role in this concept. Our employees have access to 13,500 bicycles to use on site as well as on their way to work. About 4,000 employees use these bicycles for their journey to work. About 15% of our employees use public transport, and parking places are reserved for carpools that consist of at least three people.
